Walmart Expands Drone Delivery to Bring Faster Service to More Cities

Walmart is taking a big step forward in how it delivers products by expanding its drone delivery service to five new cities. The retailer plans to offer the service from 100 stores across Charlotte, NC; Tampa and Orlando, FL; Atlanta, GA; and Houston, TX. This comes after launching drone deliveries in northwest Arkansas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. With this latest move, Walmart becomes the first retailer to roll out drone delivery across five different states.

The world’s largest retailer will start offering drone service at 100 stores across Charlotte, N.C.; Tampa and Orlando, Fla.; Atlanta; and Houston.

This push is part of Walmart’s larger plan to make shopping more convenient and to meet the increasing demand for faster service. Drone deliveries can drop off items within minutes, offering a major upgrade for time-sensitive orders. Shoppers have been using the service for things like fresh fruit, eggs, pet food, and even ice cream—showing just how flexible the offering is.

Faster delivery, greater convenience

David Guggina, Walmart’s chief e-commerce officer, pointed out that quick delivery windows help people better manage their day. “You’re telling me this item’s gonna be here in 45 minutes,” Guggina said. “Now I can plan my life around that really definite window of time.”

Strengthening its online business

Walmart expects its online arm to turn a profit this year—a key milestone after years of building up the business to compete with companies like Amazon. E-commerce hasn’t been cheap, with major costs tied to freight, fuel, and labor. To manage this, Walmart is investing in automation across its warehouses and finding ways to combine more orders in fewer trips. The company is also expanding services to include pharmacy and late-night deliveries, giving shoppers more reasons to order online.

Partnering for innovation in drone tech

Walmart’s drone growth is also backed by its partnerships. One is with Wing, a business under Alphabet Inc., which first teamed up with Walmart in 2023 to launch drone service in two Dallas stores. Since then, Wing has gotten FAA approval to fly drones up to six miles from Walmart stores, even when they’re beyond the line of sight. Walmart is also working with Zipline, another drone delivery company active in Texas and Arkansas.

This new phase in delivery shows Walmart’s ongoing effort to stay on the leading edge of retail. As customers continue to expect speed and ease, drone technology is helping the company meet those expectations—and stand out in a fast-changing online market.
