Honda Introduces Four-Wheeled Electric Bike for Last-Mile Delivery

Honda Motor Co. is revolutionizing the delivery industry with the revealing of its all-electric quadricycle, the FastPort eQuad. Designed for last-mile deliveries, this four-wheeled electric vehicle has been engineered to ride seamlessly in bike lanes (subject to local regulations). Its goal is to tackle urban challenges like traffic congestion while meeting growing consumer demand for faster and more frequent deliveries.

Small-scale production of the FastPort eQuad is set to begin this year, targeting North American and European markets. While Honda is focusing primarily on global logistics and fleet management firms, there are currently no plans to offer the vehicle for retail purchase, according to a company spokesperson.

Solving Last-Mile Delivery Challenges

The “last mile” in package delivery refers to the final step of getting goods from fulfillment hubs to their destination. It’s a complex and costly stage, particularly in congested urban areas like New York City or in regions with narrow streets such as Tokyo. The rise in same-day delivery demand has further amplified pressure on logistics networks, prompting innovations like drone delivery from companies such as Walmart and Amazon.

Notably, Walmart sits at the top of the Transport Topics Top 100 list of largest private carriers in North America, while Amazon leads as the No. 1 largest logistics carrier in North America and dominates the Top 50 Global Freight list as well.

FastPort eQuad Features

  • Power & Range: The eQuad is equipped with swappable, rechargeable battery packs (produced in India), offering a maximum range of 23 miles and speeds of up to 12 mph.
  • Cargo Capacity: Two rear-mounted cargo configurations are available. One is a large container capable of carrying up to 650 pounds, while the other is designed for lighter payloads of up to 320 pounds.
  • Driver Comfort: For a better driving experience, the quadricycle includes a UV-coated canopy, ventilation fan, and a front windshield.

Looking Ahead

Honda aims to scale production by mid-2026, with plans for mass-market availability. The FastPort eQuad will be manufactured at a specialized facility in Ohio, which the automaker states will also serve as a hub for other innovative mobility products.

This pilot-tested prototype recently completed trials in New York City, making it a promising solution for urban deliveries. Honda’s FastPort eQuad could very well pave the way for efficient, eco-friendly logistics in densely populated cities, bridging the gap between sustainability and practicality.
