According to Wards Intelligence, U.S. Class 8 retail sales reached an all-time monthly high in December with sales rising by 18.2% to 29,214 compared with 24,716 a year earlier. The number for December also surpassed the previous peak for the year, set in August at 25,581. In addition, sales were the highest they’ve ever been since data began being collected in 1998.
For the full year of 2022, sales rose by 14.6% to 254,206 compared to 221,889 in 2021.
Data showed that of the major truck manufacturers, five saw an increase in sales over the year and two saw a decrease.
Freightliner grabbed the largest share of the market with 10,660 trucks sold, accounting for 36.5% of sales of the month.
International showed thee largest year-over-year gain in market share at 69.5% with 3,612 sales.
Kenworth Truck Co.’s sales increased 23% year-over-year to 4,528 from 3,680.
Peterbilt Motors Co. saw sales rise 35.8$ to 4,624 from 3,405.
Mack Trucks’ sales declined by 16.7% to 2,436 from 2,926.
Volvo Trucks North America experienced a drop of 29.2% year-over-year to 2,590 from 3,657.
Western Star noted an increase of 26.9% in sales to 764 from 602.
