A recent report from WalletHub compared all 50 states to determine which were the best and worst to drive in. The report utilized 31 key indicators for a positive commute. The main categories include cost of ownership and maintenance, traffic and infrastructure, safety, and access to vehicles and maintenance.
The report ranked Iowa as the best state to drive in, while Hawaii was ranked the worst.
According to the report, the top 10 best states to drive in include:

- Georgia
- Ohio
- Oklahoma
- North Carolina
- Idaho
- Texas
- Tennessee
- Kansas
- Indiana
Conversely, the report lists the 10 worst states to drive in as:
- Hawaii
- Washington
- Delaware
- Rhode Island
- Maryland
- Missouri
- Nevada
- New Hampshire
- Michigan
- California
Below are a few additional highlights of the report.
Virginia had the lowest percentage of rush hour traffic congestion at just 6%, while California had the highest at 87%.
Vermont boasts the lowest rate of car theft at 0.42 per 1,000 residents, and Colorado has the highest rate of 5.24%.
Texas and Oklahoma are home to the lowest gas prices, while Hawaii an California have the highest.
The lowest average car insurance rate can be found in Ohio which is 2.5 times lower than Florida, the state with the highest rates.
Tennessee has the lowest cost of ownership and maintenance while Hawaii was ranked the costliest.
North Dakota boasts the best traffic and infrastructure, while Maryland had the worst.
Massachusetts was deemed the safest sate to drive in, with Missouri being ranked the least safe state to drive in.
